Description

In the constellation Cassiopeia is a bright emission nebula, NGC 281, commonly called “Pacman.” At the center of the nebula is a star cluster, IC 5090, whose young, hot stars are generating intense solar winds that sculpt channels and pockets in the surrounding gases and dust. Along the perimeter of the nebula are a collection of Bok globules, as well as a large dust cloud that forms a dark slash across the mass.

Most of the data for this image were collected in 2019 using a ZWO ASI 1600MM Pro and Astrodon narrowband filters. This year I added 2.5 hours of RGB data collected with a ZWO ASI 2600MM Pro and Chroma narrowband filters. I used the narrowband data to create an SHO rendition employing on the best 17 hours with HFR 2.2-2.8, and a master luminance using Ha and SII data with HFR of 2.3 or less. I then add natural star color using the RGB data. I cropped the resulting image to feature the dynamic, jagged perimeter of the nebula.
